* Route details: La Giettaz – Flumet – Notre Dame de Bellecombe – Crest Voland – Le Cernix – Flon – Héry-sur-Ugine – Col de l’Apertaz – Héry-sur-Ugine – Flumet – La Giettaz: 71 km / 2,060 m+ * Challenging sections: - From the start in Flumet, the road climbs towards Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe with an initial challenging stretch of around 2 km at 7 per cent, followed by a more runnable section at 5.5 per cent. After the village, head towards Crest-Voland via Bellecombe: a short descent precedes a sustained climb of around 2 km at an average gradient of 8 per cent. Enough to really wake your legs up before continuing on to the Col de l’Arpettaz! - The main challenge: the Col de l’Arpettaz via the north-east slope, starting from the Flon bridge in the Gorges de l’Arly. This first section is gruelling, with 2.9 km at an average gradient of nearly 8 per cent. Then, just after Héry-sur-Ugine, the gradient steepens on the Route de la Lierre with 4.3 km at nearly 9 per cent up to just above Hauteville, including a very tough 700-metre section at 10.5 per cent! The gradient eases slightly with 1.2 km at an average of 6–7 per cent up to the Chalets de la Lierre. After a brief respite – a 2.4 km stretch at 5 per cent – there’s one final 500-metre climb at 7.5 per cent to reach the summit at an altitude of 1,590 metres. All this takes place against a backdrop of stunning beauty, with Mont Charvin opposite and Mont Blanc to your right. You’ll need to be very careful on the descent, which can quickly become treacherous. Type of land : Hard coating (tar, cement, flooring)
