Sylvestre the Minstrel: Barrel organ

  • Cultural
  • Concert
Place du Cernix, place du cernix, 73590 Cohennoz

Description

Mechanical music underwent significant development during the 18th century. The barrel organ, an iconic symbol of this musical genre, helped to popularise street songs by presenting pieces with a wide variety of sounds.
Today, perforated rolls (10,000 perforations for a 10-metre roll, sufficient for a piece of music lasting around 3 minutes) make it possible to cover virtually any musical repertoire. The repertoire on offer is from the 1900s and 1920s. It offers a glimpse into the poetry of Paris’s open-air dance halls, Sundays by the Seine, and romantic encounters at musette dances, as well as more recent songs representative of the heritage of French chanson.
